The exercise

The exercise

A self-initiated exercise. Could a tennis identity feel warm and human by showing the people around the game instead of the players? Tramline is the answer we drew: a portrait collection, a crest and a wordmark, set out as a brand.

The idea

Paint the people behind the game. Nine portraits of match day, each one someone absorbed in a job, all on the same grass green.

Key decisions

01

A crest from the umpire’s chair

Why

Almost every tennis badge uses a racket or a ball.

Effect

The umpire’s chair breaking out of a square is specific to tennis and still reads at the size of a shirt badge.

02

People at work

Why

Action shots of players look like every sports brand.

Effect

A stringer, a line-marker and a coach caught mid-task make the brand feel warm and human.

03

One green, the colour of the court

Why

Nine paintings in nine greens would look like nine different brands.

Effect

Every portrait is corrected to the same grass green, so the collection reads as one set.
